Back in May 2024, the Danforth-Kingston 4 All campaign hosted their first community ride attended by about 100 people which called on Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Parthi Kandavel to host public consultations for the Danforth-Kingston Complete Street Extension project. A Phase 1 consultation did get held later that month, but then the Phase 2 consultation kept getting held up with Bill 212 being blamed for the delay. Danforth-Kingston 4 All organized today’s “Just Bluffing Around” ride to call for that Phase 2 consultation which has been confirmed on Friday with details to come in October.
This ride had two starting points; one at Scarborough GO station and the other at Danforth and Main. About 20 to 30 people had gathered at Danforth and Main.
George and Ben – Cycle Toronto’s ride guides – gave a brief safety talk followed by a group photo taken by a reporter from Beach Metro. I’ll share that article when it gets published.
Here we go on the Danforth bike lanes!
The bike lanes ended about one kilometre later at Victoria Park.
Taking the lane at Pharmacy Avenue.
We gathered by the slip lane to turn left onto Birchmount.
On Pinegrove Avenue adjacent to the Kingston-Danforth ramp.
Both the Scarborough GO and Danforth-Main groups converged at Highview Park.
Kevin Rupasinghe with Danforth-Kingston 4 All stressed the recent consultation news was no coincidence and that people had been calling for the Danforth-Kingston bike lanes for years.
Cycle Toronto’s Michael Longfield highlighted the challenges and recent court victory regarding Bill 212, as well as how yesterday's memorial ride served as a reminder for why we must build more safe streets.
Marvin Macaraig of Scarborough Cycles (left) talked about some of the other rides his group organized including Taylor Creek, The Meadoway, and Huntingwood Day to help build cycling culture in Scarborough. George then recapped the safety talk done at Danforth and Main.
I recorded a video of the ride leaving Highview Park which I noticed at least 60 riders were present.
Over 60 people attended today's Just Bluffing Around ride to the Scarborough Bluffs hosted by Danforth Kingston 4 All. Here's a video of the ride as it was leaving Highview Park. Don't forget to join the over 1500 who signed the petition at www.dk4all.ca. #BikeTO #ScarbTO #TOpoli #VisionZero

On Kingston Road where I wouldn’t be caught dead riding without the safety in numbers seen here.
Heading down the steep hill on Brimley to the Scarborough Bluffs.
A little more pedalling before getting to the beach followed by a short walk in the sand.
What a beautiful day to be out on the beach!
A lunch was provided at the beach including samosas, sandwiches, veggies, watermelon, and cookies. Yum!
Some other media outlets such as CityNews and CBC / Radio-Canada were present. Here’s CityNews interviewing Marianna Marchioro with the Danforth-Kingston 4 All campaign.
Some campaign literature the campaign produced. Not unlike those Bells on Bloor and Community Bikeways’ “We Belong on Bloor” campaign handed out. If you haven’t already done so, please join the over 1500 people who signed the petition at www.dk4all.ca.
After some lunch, it was time to go up that steep hill which made bringing the gravel bike a good idea. The TRCA plans to start building a new multi-use path from Bluffers Park to Barkdene Hills this fall, while the first part of the Scarborough Waterfront Trail is expected to start after Brimley is finished.
To avoid Kingston Road, I took the Waterfront Trail involving some dirt paths. The trail goes by St. John Henry Newman Catholic High School which has some nice architecture.
A view of the lake from the top of the Bluffs.
There’s a short multi-use path on Kingston just west of the Kingston-Danforth interchange. Wished it could be extended east past that interchange. I then took Birchmount and Danforth to get back west.
While the recent consultation announcement is good news, only the Kingston Road section will be dealt with while construction would take place in 2027. This is because no lane removals are needed on Kingston Road given how wide it is, while Danforth and the short stretch of Birchmount have been deferred until further notice. Hence why the project website now says “A Safer Kingston Road”.
Thanks Danforth-Kingston 4 All for organizing this fun ride! Please sign the petition if you haven’t already done so, as well as make sure to come out to the public consultations when they get announced in October. Something I do plan to cover on this blog.
CBC News' article about today's live is now up, while I was featured on Radio-Canada's "Le Téléjournal Ontario" for some French language coverage.
