On July 31, 2025, 28-year-old Samuel Willetts – an aspiring cinematographer – died from a crash which happened two weeks prior at Church and Gerrard Streets. Unlike past cyclist deaths, this one didn’t get reported in the media until at least a week later, while the memorial ride wasn’t held until today to accommodate out-of-town family members. Dozens of cyclists gathered at Bloor and Spadina to start the ride.
Mozzie came along for the ride during which he was very well behaved. Where's Loki?
Joey Schwartz telling everyone the ride route and other instructions.
Started riding east on Bloor Street.
A quick look back.
Regrouping at Yonge and Bloor Streets. This was needed a few times since no corking was done at intersections.
Riding down Church Street.
Gathered at the crash site. It should be noted Gerrard Street is technically a protected bike lane, but the protection disappears at the intersection. Something Toronto needs to get better at addressing.
Geoff Bercarich and Joey setting up the ghost bike.
The ghost bike with name tag now installed.
A moment of silence for Samuel Willetts.
The ghost bike being decorated. Some family members were handing out cookies during this time.
One last look at the ghost bike before dispersing. Some people went to the nearby Draw The Line climate rally afterwards, but we went back home since Mozzie would probably get bored there.
Thanks Geoff and Joey from ARC for putting together today’s ride and to the dozens of people who rode to pay their respects. As always, you never ride alone.
