Earlier today, Community Bikeways hosted their third Loop Trail ride to promote the need to fill in the ten gaps along the trail. (you can read about the previous ride here) This edition was joined by a sister ride organized by Misha Perozak of the Scarborough Junction Community which called for the building of the West Scarborough Rail Trail from Warden to Kennedy Stations. About 40 people – myself included – started from the Distillery District while the Scarborough ride – which Jun wrote about on his blog – started at Warden Hilltop Community Centre and brought in a similar number if not more.

Bartley Smith Greenway and the Vaughan Super Trail
This week has been a stinker for Toronto’s cycling community. On Tuesday, mayoral candidate Brad Bradford called for the Bloor bike lanes in Etobicoke from South Kingsway to Resurrection Road to be removed. Earlier today, the Ontario Court of Appeal overturned Justice Paul Schabas’ ruling from July 2025 in favour of Cycle Toronto by arguing the bike lane removals along Bloor, Yonge, and University were unconstitutional. While it remains unclear whether Cycle Toronto will choose to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada – which only hears a limited number of cases deemed in the national interest – I used my day off work today to explore the Bartley Smith Greenway. I’ll also explain how it fits with the larger Vaughan Super Trail initiative.

Ride The Loop Close The Gaps
Four years ago, Community Bikeways hosted their first ride along the Loop Trail; a 72 km loop along the Martin Goodman, Humber River, Finch Hydro Corridor, and Don River Trails. At the time, I only made it to Finch West Station. The group has since held another ride in Fall 2025 – you can read Jun’s recap here – and now one held today. About fifty people braved the cold, hail, snow, rain, sunshine, and obstacles for today’s ride to advocate for the need to close the gaps along this trail.

August 2025 Cycling Construction Check In
Last year, Toronto installed almost 27 kilometres of on-street bikeways; making it the second highest year ever after the 30 kilometres installed in 2020 during the pandemic. This includes 8.5 kilometres for Finch Avenue West which I deemed to be substantially completed per a site visit, but the City of Toronto didn’t count as Metrolinx hadn’t transferred the street back to the City. Even excluding Finch, 18 kilometres is still respectable compared to prior years. With Doug Ford’s Bill 212 limiting new bike lane installations and Cycle Toronto’s charter challenge win last month (which the Ford government formally submitted their appeal today), it made me wonder what the impact on new bike lane installations would be.

October 2024 Eglinton and Finch Check Ups
With Metrolinx refusing to provide an opening date for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT until three months from that time, the much-delayed transit line won’t be opening this year. The Finch West LRT celebrated a milestone recently with all stations and stops being completed, but also lacks an opening date and has even been subject to a recent lawsuit. But where do things stand with their respective bikeways? I did a couple of site checks this week after work to find out.

Memorial Ride at Brimley & McNicoll
Unfortunately, it seems Toronto can’t get by a single year without a cyclist getting killed. On Monday, January 30, a woman in her 60’s was struck by a driver at Brimley & McNicoll and died of her injuries on Saturday, February 3. Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists hosted a memorial ride for the fallen cyclist earlier today which started at Kennedy Station.

Let's Build a Cycling Loop in Scarborough
With today’s nice weather and a day off work, I went for a ride around Scarborough. It was a brutal 90 kilometre trek with 681 metres of elevation gain that took me to the northeastern part of the City and back. It helped give me a feel for what is needed to complete a recreational loop east of Victoria Park.

Toronto Loop (and a Protected Intersection)
On Sunday, April 24, Albert, Mark, Arthur, and I from the Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition joined urban planner Al Rezoski for a ride covering the Toronto Loop. This recreational loop is 81 kilometres long which consists of the Martin Goodman Trail, Humber River Trail, Finch Hydro Corridor, and the Don River trail system. The loop is one of Mayor John Tory’s long term initiatives which has the potential to encourage cycle tourism in the city. Before starting by Queen’s Park, Al showed us a map of the loop and highlighted the following seven gaps which we planned to stop at for discussion. Some of these gaps will be addressed with the latest bike plan.
- Stephen Drive (north of The Queensway)
- Weston Road (between St. Phillips Road and Cardell Avenue)
- Finch Hydro Corridor (between Weston Road and Norfinch Drive)
- G Ross Lord Park (near Finch Avenue and Dufferin Street)
- Yonge Street (at Hendon and Bishop Avenues)
- Betty Sutherland Trail (between Duncan Mill and York Mills Roads)
- West Don River Trail (near Eglinton Avenue and Leslie Street)

Cycling Good Cheer Along Yonge
About 30 to 40 people took part in Sunday’s 2nd Annual Cycling Good Cheer ride which started at Hendon Park in North York (a.k.a. the North Pole 😉) and ended at City Hall using Yonge Street, Bloor Street, and University Avenue. Janet Joy Wilson – a fellow founding member of the Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition – put together the ride while Albert Koehl was Santa. Many of us had antlers attached to our helmets while some opted to decorate our bikes. It was great having lots of people honk and wave at us with approval.
For a proper recap, I encourage you to read Jun N’s blog post and watch this video from Heather’s and Pier’s Bromptoning blog. I will instead focus on three cycling mishaps which deserve lumps of coal, as well as some hope as 2022 nears.
