New Bikeways on Portland and Blue Jays Way

Recently, it was brought to my attention on multiple social media platforms that some new bikeways were installed on Portland Street and Blue Jays Way. Since I had some errands to do nearby anyway, I decided to check them out. I will also mention a few upcoming events given tomorrow marks the start of Bike Month.

When I got to Richmond and Portland, I noticed bicycle signals were installed at all four corners. However, the conversion to a bi-directional cycle track on Richmond from Augusta to Portland hasn’t happened yet.

Looking south, I can see these “bikeway in progress” signs and the cycle track painted in from Richmond to Adelaide.

Richmond to Queen also appears to be painted in, though barriers will be installed later.

One stretch from Adelaide to King hasn’t been painted in yet, but you can see the markings for where the paint will go.

Even though the bikeway is not yet completed, people are already riding it.

The Portland and Wellington intersection has been transformed into a diagonal diverter with planter pots, while cyclists can continue to access all four directions.

The paint has been put in all the way to Front Street where cyclists can cross to Puente De Luz to Dan Leckie Way and the Martin Goodman Trail.

On Wellington, you can see a “no bicycles” sign at Blue Jays Way. There was supposed to be an extension planned from here to Simcoe Street, but that was likely gutted because of Bills 212 and 60.

The existing bikeway south of Wellington has been upgraded with poured in concrete curbs.

At last, that one block gap from Wellington to King Streets has been filled in!

The existing Peter Street bikeway from King to Queen Streets was also upgraded with poured in concrete curbs. Given provincial legislation, Cycle Toronto had been calling on the City to upgrade existing bikeways to better prevent motorists from parking in bike lanes and to make them more aesthetically pleasing. Something which was approved by City Council in April.

As far as events are concerned, the following are coming up this week:

Given all these events, you can expect my blog to be considerably busier than normal for the next few days. Meanwhile, I hope you are enjoying this nice weather and Happy Bike Month! 😊

Anthony recorded this video of the new diverter at Portland and Wellington.
