On May 11, 2026, the TRCA updated the East Don Trail project website to say work on the Phase 1 trail is expected to be done by early July. However, I was notified by Tom on Strava last weekend that the trail is now fully paved from Taylor Creek all the way to Bermondsey. This morning, I used my day off work to check it out.
Per the above photo, this is the first time I saw pavement from the Taylor Creek Trail to the bridge. I take it those rubber mats covering the bridge will be removed soon.
Some freshly laid soil has been placed on both sides of the trail, though some fencing remains to be done. Note some parts of single-track trail are still visible on the left.
The Garfield mural is going to get a lot more visitors soon. 😊
This large empty field used to have parked construction vehicles and trail materials laid. Now it’s been covered with fresh soil and a resting area, though a few panels remain to be installed. Several of these rest areas can be found along this trail.
There used to be a pronounced lip between the trail and this bridge, but not anymore.
The small gravel patch north of that bridge has been replaced with asphalt.
The grass near the tunnel has been growing in nicely.
The bridges and boardwalk past the tunnel may feel a bit rougher to ride on than asphalt, but it makes for a visually pleasing aesthetic.
Approaching the thunderdome.
Going up the thunderdome to cross the railway tracks.
A quick look towards the south.
Looking north towards the Richmond Hill line.
This small parking lot is where Phase 3 of the East Don Trail is supposed to begin. I don’t know when construction will start, but it will eventually connect with the existing Phase 2 Trail near Wigmore Park.
From this point onwards, the East Don Trail starts a steep climb up and will become part of The Meadoway.
Finally made it to the top of the hill at Bermondsey Transfer Station. The trail could use some cleaning up here.
A small patch of gravel remains where the trail ends at Bermondsey. The Bermondsey to Eglinton stretch of The Meadoway is now expected to start construction in Spring 2027 instead of this year.
Given the recent bad news on Eglinton, it’s nice to finally have some good bike news in this city, while I will need to check out the new Portland Street and recently upgraded Peter Street bikeways soon. As of now, we are one giant leap closer to having a continuous trail from Lake Ontario to the Toronto Zoo, while I hope Phase 3 of the East Don Trail can start construction soon.
Now the question of when should a group ride be held to celebrate this new trail? 😉
