July 2026 Lower Don Meanderings

One trail closure which has long frustrated cyclists in Toronto is that of the Lower Don Trail south of Pottery Road. It was originally supposed to reopen in Summer 2024, but after several missed deadlines, the City updated the project website in June stating they would pave and reopen the trail as soon as possible. The Riverdale Park ramp was deferred due to “unsuitable soil conditions” for building the foundation. This afternoon, I decided to check out the progress, as well as check some new developments at Biidaasige Park and along Lake Shore Boulevard.

April 2026 Site Checks Along the Don

Today was a beautiful Good Friday to be outside with highs of 20’C expected. Since I haven’t checked the East Don Trail since December and there was some other construction happening along the Lower Don Trail, I took out Raccoon – my Brodie gravel bike – for its first ride of the year!

East Don Trail May 2025 Update

The last time I checked out the East Don Trail was in October 2024 when I first noticed the completion of the bridge adjacent to the double switchback structure. This effectively left the tunnel as the only major obstacle remaining. Earlier this month, the Urban Toronto forum showed some posts indicating new activity at the tunnel site. I decided to bike over and check things out, as well as highlight a few other updates along the way.

An In Person Consultation for Broadview

Monday marked the first cycling public consultation I got to attend in person since the COVID-19 pandemic began. As much as it can be more convenient to attend the virtual ones – especially when they are far away – the experience helped me appreciate the value of in person sessions. Mainly the ability to ask more detailed questions to city staff, use sticky notes to comment on street roll out plans, and network with staff and other residents. Let’s review what the Broadview Extension environmental assessment has to offer and how the City can build on the plan.
