TCBC 5th Anniversary Ride to the Brickworks

Last month marked five years since the Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition was started by Albert Koehl, Janet Joy Wilson, and I; among others. To help mark the anniversary and Bike Month, Jessie Ye and Janet Joy organized a ride from AccessPoint on Danforth to the Evergreen Brickworks along with Marvin of Scarborough Cycles (and Access Alliance) and Regenesis. About thirty people took part.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the west end feeder ride, but Jun N has you covered with his blog post. He also confirmed the installation of the Millicent contraflow pictured below which prompted an update to my bike lane tracker.

I met up with the group at AccessPoint on Danforth where people could grab some coffee and snacks.

Janet Joy emceed the event and did a short trivia with prizes such as stickers, a bike inner tube, a light, and Albert’s “Wheeling Through Toronto” book.

Getting ready to ride.

The first stretch of Danforth without bike lanes wasn't comfortable, but there’s safety in numbers.

At the Tayor Creek Park parking lot, we could almost squeeze 28 bikes (including a trailer and cargo bike) in two parking spaces! 😊 It goes to show bikes don’t cause gridlock; cars do!

Riding along the Taylor Creek Trail. Something I hadn’t done in a long time.

One unique feature of the Taylor Creek Trail is the trail splits in two in a few places where one side allows riders to go through the water.

It’s a nice (but hot) day for a ride!

We regrouped at the Forks of the Don where the Taylor Creek, West Don, Lower Don, and the future East Don Trails converge.

There were several construction vehicles along the Lower Don Trail doing Ontario Line work.

I recorded a video of the ride on the Lower Don Trail just before arriving at Pottery Road.

Thanks @jsquaredink.bsky.social & Jessie for organizing today's @bikewaysto.bsky.social 5th Anniversary Ride from AccessPoint Danforth in #ScarbTO to the Evergreen Brickworks along the Taylor Creek Trail! Here's a short video from the ride which about 30 people attended. #BikeTO #TOpoli #VisionZero

Crossing Pottery Road.

Riding along Bayview Avenue which had some guard rails damaged.

Crossing Bayview Avenue.

The ride ended at the Evergreen Brickworks where attendees could visit Regenesis Cycle Brick Works or the Saturday farmers market. However, I chose to leave at this point to do some errands on the way home.

Thanks Janet Joy and Jessie for organizing, to the fellow ride marshals, and to those who rode with us today! Look forward to continuing TCBC’s work in the months and years ahead! 😊
